About This Product

Liquorice Root Glycyrrhiza glabra

Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), known as Mulethi or Yashtimadhu in Ayurveda, is one of the most consumed medicinal roots in the world. Its primary active compound, glycyrrhizin (glycyrrhizinic acid), is 50 times sweeter than sucrose and exhibits significant anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, hepatoprotective and immunomodulatory activity. Flavonoids including liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin contribute additional antioxidant and phytoestrogenic properties.

Demand spans multiple industries: Ayurvedic and Unani formulations, pharma excipients (natural sweetener, tablet binder), food and confectionery, tobacco flavouring, and increasingly the nutraceutical sector for gut health and adrenal support supplements. PAX Herbal sources premium quality dried root pieces and powder from Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Deglycyrrhizinated liquorice (DGL) extract — used in gut health formulations — is available through our Herbal Extracts category.

DGL (deglycyrrhizinated liquorice) is a processed extract with glycyrrhizin removed — used where blood pressure concerns require elimination of mineralocorticoid effects. PAX supplies whole root/powder; DGL extracts are available separately.
