About This Product

Celery Seed Oleoresin

Celery seed oleoresin is a concentrated extract of dried celery seeds (Apium graveolens) — capturing the complex warm, herbal, slightly bitter celery character that is immediately recognisable in Bloody Mary cocktails, soups, meat products and savoury seasonings. The characteristic aroma comes from phthalide compounds — particularly sedanolide and 3-n-butyl phthalide — which are relatively rare natural flavour compounds found in significant amounts only in celery and related apiaceae plants.

PAX Herbal tests each batch for sedanolide presence and confirms the phthalide profile by GC/MS. Volatile oil content is 15%+. The oleoresin is used by food manufacturers as a consistent, convenient celery flavouring — replacing raw celery seed powder in applications where particle-free, standardised character is required.

Common Questions

Buyer FAQs

Phthalides (sedanolide, 3-n-butyl phthalide, neocnidilide) are a class of bicyclic lactone compounds found in significant concentrations almost exclusively in Apium graveolens (celery) and related plants. They are responsible for celery's unique warm, herbal, slightly sweet-bitter character — a flavour note that cannot be replicated by other natural ingredients.
Celery seed powder has variable phthalide content and can cause particle filtration issues in liquid food products. The oleoresin provides standardised, consistent celery character, is particle-free for clear liquid products, requires 10–15x less material by weight, and has a longer shelf life than ground seed.
Yes — phthalides are relatively rare natural fragrance compounds used in green, earthy and gourmand fragrance compositions. 3-n-Butyl phthalide specifically is used by fragrance chemists to add a distinctive warm, herbal-green note. Natural celery oleoresin is the most accessible source of these compounds.
MOQ is 25 kg. Samples available for flavour application and sensory testing.
