About This Product
Indian Bay Leaf (Tejpatta)
Indian bay leaf (Cinnamomum tamala), called Tejpatta, is commonly confused with European bay leaf (Laurus nobilis) — but they are distinct plants with different aromas. Tejpatta has a characteristic cinnamon-clove aroma (due to its relation to the Cinnamomum family) rather than the eucalyptus-herbal aroma of Mediterranean Laurus. Both are used extensively in cooking, but Indian bay leaf is the defining flavouring leaf in North Indian biryanis, dals and meat dishes.
PAX Herbal supplies whole dried tejpatta leaves and broken grades. Leaves are hand-sorted for uniform green colour, free from yellowing and excessive broken material. Volatile oil content (1%+) is tested. European Laurus nobilis bay is also available as an alternative for buyers requiring the Mediterranean type.
