About This Product

Asafoetida Ferula Resin

Asafoetida (Ferula assa-foetida), called Hing in India, is one of the most distinctive and culturally significant flavouring agents in the world. Obtained from the dried latex (gum resin) of the Ferula plant root, it has a powerful sulphurous, garlic-onion aroma in its raw state that transforms during cooking into a remarkably pleasant, onion-like savouriness — making it indispensable in Indian vegetarian cooking where it substitutes for garlic and onion.

PAX Herbal supplies two forms: Natural resin (pure gum extract, 40–60% resin content, the most potent form) and Compounded hing (natural resin mixed with wheat flour or rice flour starch, diluted to 10–30% resin — the common commercial form used in Indian cooking). Both are available in lump, granule and powder form.

We supply to spice manufacturers, food companies, Ayurvedic formulators and pharmaceutical flavour extraction companies.

Common Questions

Buyer FAQs

Natural resin is the raw gum extracted from the Ferula root — it is 40–60% resin and extremely potent. Compounded hing is the commercial product: natural resin mixed with wheat or rice flour at various dilution ratios (10–30% resin) — it is what most cooks use. PAX Herbal supplies both.
Natural resin asafoetida is naturally gluten-free. Most compounded hing is mixed with wheat flour — not gluten-free. We can supply rice flour-compounded asafoetida (gluten-free) on request, which is growing in demand.
The characteristic smell comes from organosulfide compounds (similar to garlic and onion). When these compounds are heated in oil, they undergo chemical transformation into milder, pleasant-tasting compounds — this "blooming" in hot oil is why all recipes specify adding hing to hot fat first.
MOQ is 100 kg for compounded grades, 50 kg for natural resin. Sample quantities available.
